Whether you’re single malt snob, or just getting into whisky, there are four things to remember to get the most out of your dram: the glass, the nose, temperature & water.

1. THE GLASS
A good, short glass with a heavy bottom – tumbler or tulip is perfect for enjoying your whisky neat, with a little water or ice. Swirl it gently, like a glass of wine, to release the vapours and also to see how viscous it is. 

2. THE NOSE
Some say the most of the pleasure in tasting whisky is actually in smelling it! From about an inch above the glass, gently draw air into your nose - if you feel a prickle or a burn, pull back a little, if you don't smell much, stick your nose a little further into the glass. Smell is often the best indicator of a whisky's flavour - focus on the aromas or 'notes.' Swirl gently to release more of the vapours.   

3. TEMPERATURE
If you're new to whisky, you might find it easier to drink when chilled. Temperature will change the flavours you can taste - to start, add a few pieces of ice, and perhaps reduce over time.

4. WATER
Adding water to your whisky will also change the flavour profile. You can experiment by taking a sip of water in between sips of whiskies, or adding a few drops to your glass. Water may also reduce the burning feeling you get from high-alcohol whiskies.
