Bourbon - The Iconic American Spirit. A barrel aged whisky produced exclusively in the United States. To qualify as Bourbon, the spirit must follow an exacting set of standards, known as the ABCs of bourbon.
AMERICA: Must be made in the US
BARRELS: Must be aged in new charred oak barrels
CORN: Must be made with a minimum of 51% corn
There are strict rules in place for the recipe as well as a rigorous ageing process in oak barrels that are charred on the inside to serve as a filter and colouring medium. Bourbon has many different flavour profiles ranging from straight Bourbon (aged for a minimum of two years), to spicy or sweet. You can serve your bourbon neat, on the rocks, with ginger ale, cola or in classic cocktails like the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned, The Manhattan or the Clermont Sour (pictured and below)
60ml Quality bourbon like Jim Beam Black Label
15ml fresh lemon juice
30ml fresh orange juice
Egg white (optional)
Garnish: Orange peel
Measure and pour ingredients into a boston glass and dry shake. Fill completely with ice and shake vigorously. Strain over ice into a rocks glass and garnish. Try with egg white for a velvety smooth texture.
